Seimei Single Cultivar 30g

Seimei is a young, rare cultivar. Registered in 2017, it is a cross between Fuushun and Saemidori developed at the Makurazaki research institute in Kagoshima prefecture. Where Uji's inland valleys offer cool mist and moderate seasons, Kagoshima sits at the southern edge of Japan's main islands. The climate is warmer and is shaped by coastal winds; seimei thrives at this elevation and rooting in mineral dense volcanic soils. The windy temperatures slow the plant's growth, allowing amino acids like l-theanine to accumulate rather than convert into bitter-tasting catechins. The result is a matcha with more natural sweetness and less astringency than what most soils can offer. It remains rare, difficult to source even within Japan, and represents something close to the frontier of what the country's tea tradition is becoming.

Seimei's aroma opens with sweet cream and pear scent; it is soft, almost confectionary and reminds me of a buttery pear tart. On the palate, it settles into something richer: buttered peas, full and savory, with a fruity pear finish that carries through cleanly. Served on its own, it stands out and gently surprises. When served with milk, the creaminess deepens and a quiet complexity emerges. It is the kind of matcha that reveals itself slowly, and asks for nothing added.
